Steps to LearningFifth Grade Social Studies

The major focus is the study of U. S. History from the Civil War to the present. In addition, key topics and geographic skills are assessed.

Students will:
  • explain sectional differences before the Civil War, its major events, and leaders.
  • describe how Reconstruction affected the North and the South.
  • explain the growth of big business and its leaders.
  • explain the impact of immigration on the U. S. and the rise of the labor movement.
  • describe the settlement of the last West.
  • explain how the U. S. acquired overseas territories.
  • identify Progressive reforms and leaders.
  • explain the causes of the Great Depression, its effect on American life, and the impact of the New Deal.
  • identify the causes and major events of World War II and explain its impact on the United States and the world.
  • describe Soviet/American relations during the COld War and the importance of the Space Race.
  • explain the major events of the Civil Rights movement and its leaders.
  • identify the major events of the post-World War II presidential administrations.
