Fifth Grade Mathematics
In fifth grade, students expand their knowledge of fractions, decimals, and positive and negative numbers. They determine length and area and understand how to use formulas to determine the volume of simple geometric solids. Students expand the concept of measurement and learn to use appropriate measuring tools. They use grids, tables, graphs, and charts to record and analyze data.
Students will:
- understand the place value system and be able to represent and compare whole numbers and decimals.
- add, subtract, multiply, and divide with decimals through hundredths.
- identify and represent on a number line decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, and positive and negative integers.
- use a letter to represent an unknown number; write and evaluate simple algebraic expressions with one variable.
- use rulers, compasses, and protractors to draw, measure, and construct lines, angles, and plane figures.
- find the area of polygons.
- solve problems involving elapsed time.
- find the mean, mode, range, and median of a group of numbers.
- construct and interpret graphs.
