First Grade Science
The first grade science curriculum includes five units of study: Earth's Land and Water, Plants, Animals, Weather, and Magnets.
Students will:
- group rocks by color, shape, texture, and hardness.
- describe the components of different types of soil and how each type absorbs water.
- name major geological features of the earth, such as mountains, canyons, and plains.
- identify common parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaf, flower) and compare different kinds of plants.
- demonstrate that plants are living things based on their survival needs and explain plants' roles in society.
- explain, for animals, their basic needs, types of movement, body coverings, and types of shelters.
- using a thermometer and barometer, predict weather conditions and choose appropriate clothing.
- using illustrations, identify how the seasons relate to weather.
- investigate the characteristics of magnets and magnetic fields.
