First Grade
Mathematics
In the first grade, students learn the basic processes of addition and subtraction. They develop the concept of place value and the importance of number patterns to our number system. Students begin to understand the concept of measurement.
Students will:
- recognize and use number patterns to solve problems (0-100).
- count money to 50 cents.
- understand the importance of place value (for example: tens place, hundreds place).
- order, read, write, and count from any number to 100.
- add and subtract two 2-digit numbers without regrouping.
- use the language and symbols of mathematics.
- create, describe, and extend concrete, visual , auditory, and number patterns.
- recognize the basic properties (similarities and differences) of geometric figures.
- measure objects to the nearest inch or centimeter, pound or kilogram; use the thermometer to measure temperature.
- read and write time to the nearest hour and half-hour.
