RELEASE # 02-067
Date: April 29, 2002

Lindsey is Tennessee’s Outstanding Superintendent

The Tennessee Parent Teacher Association named Dr. Charles Lindsey its Outstanding Tennessee Superintendent for 2002 Friday, in Johnson City, Tenn., during the organization’s 89th annual convention.

“Dr. Lindsey’s support and dedication made it an honor to nominate him for this award,” said Bobbie Wyatt, the Knox County PTA President. “Over the past two years as council president, I have approached Dr. Lindsey many times, and he has supported us on every project.”

The PTA specifically recognized Lindsey for his support of the “Teacher Supply Depot.” The depot provides free school supplies to teachers for classroom use, and brings in donations from community members and businesses around the county. According to the PTA Lindsey was very supportive. Through his assistance, the project became a reality and has opened to over 1000 teachers who have taken an estimated $120,000 of items to be used in their classrooms.

“Of all the entries received, the judges determined that Dr. Lindsey’s support of the PTA and its programs and projects was exceptional,” said Lucy Spurgeon, the state PTA President. “His commitment to parental involvement and support to the PTA sponsored parental involvement policy was unprecedented,” she said.

When asked to adopt a system-wide parental involvement policy, Lindsey was more than willing to embrace the PTA's proposal, and he worked to incorporate the suggestions into the formal School Board policy format. The policy was recently adopted by the Knox County Board of Education, and it has served as a model for a similar policy adopted by the Tennessee PTA.

“This is a real surprise and an honor,” said Lindsey. “Parent and community involvement are critical to the success of our schools and students. I am pleased to be able to support the PTA and the many other organizations that are dedication to improving our schools and bettering the welfare of our students.”
