New Teacher Induction

Knox County Schools provides comprehensive induction to all new teachers both novice and new to KCS.  This program includes three major components:

I. Orientation

  • Two and one-half days of intense orientation for a targeted grade-level group of new teachers focusing on the first 100 days of school.  Instructional emphasis is on curriculum, classroom management, instructional strategies, and must-know KCS procedures/processes.
  • One-half day KCS orientation and welcome to all teachers new to KCS.

II. New Teacher Academy

  • Teachers new to KCS will be assigned to a cohort that will meet bimonthly from September to February in a designated location.  The cohorts provide an opportunity for collegial collaboration and support with a system-wide focus on learning the ropes (discipline, routines, field trips, curriculum guides, standardized testing, professional development and end of year management), organizing the classroom for learning, effective lesson planning, teaching in the diverse classroom, using technology in instruction and exploring literature. Stipends are provided to those who participate and who lead the cohorts.

III. School-based Mentoring

  • School based mentoring is managed and overseen by each school’s mentor/professional development team
  • All new teachers will be assigned a peer mentor in the school to which they have been assigned.  These formal mentor/protégé relationships should ideally be in place for 2 years.
  • Mentoring guidelines specify mentors acting as professional role models and leaders, academic coaches, liaisons, facilitators, relationship builders, and supporters.

Mentors who complete the requirements will be paid a stipend and their school will be provided funds for program expenses.
