Knox County Schools Hearing Services: Programs

 

ELEMENTARY SITE BASED HEARING PROGRAMS (kindergarten – grade 5)

 

TOTAL COMMUNICATION SITE BASED PROGRAM
The total communication site based program is presently located at Amherst Elementary School, Kindergarten through grade 5.

  • Hearing services are provided to students who are deaf and hearing impaired based on need and determined by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team.
  • Emphasizes the total communication method.
  • Most academic instruction is provided by the hearing specialist(s) in a small group or a comprehensive developmental classroom.
  • Students are integrated with the general education classrooms for special areas (music, physical education, art, library, lunch, and recess).
  • Audiology services are provided as needed.
  • Additional special education services are provided as needed (speech/language, occupational/physical therapy, vision…).
  • Educational interpreters provide services in the general education classrooms and special areas as needed.
