Knox County Schools Hearing Services: Programs
MIDDLE SCHOOL SITE BASED HEARING PROGRAM
(6th grade – 8th
grade)
The middle school site based program is presently
located at Northwest Middle School, grades 6 through
8.
- Hearing services are provided based on need
as determined by the Individualized Education Progam (IEP) Team.
- Emphasizes oral/aural
and total communication methodologies.
- Various
amplification systems utilized (hearing aids,
cochlear implants, FM Systems).
- Most academic
instruction is provided by the hearing specialist(s)
in a comprehensive developmental classroom
for students who are deaf and/or hearing impaired.
- Students
are integrated in the general education classes
for special areas such as: music, physical
education, art, health, computer skills, technology,
and life skills.
- Students are integrated in
the general education curriculum for subjects
such as reading, language
arts, math, science, and social studies based
on each student’s level.
- Educational interpreters facilitate communication
in the general curriculum based on student
need.
- Audiology services are provided
by the audiologist as needed.
- Additional special
education services are provided as needed
such as resource speech/language, occupational/physical
therapy…
