Knox County Schools Hearing Services: Programs
ELEMENTARY SITE BASED HEARING PROGRAMS (kindergarten – grade
5)
ORAL/AURAL SITE BASED PROGRAM
The oral/aural sited based hearing program is presently
located at Bearden Elementary School, Kindergarten
through grade 5.
- Hearing services are provided to students who
are hearing impaired based on need as
- determined
by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team.
- Emphasizes oral/aural and
Verbotonal methodologies.
- Various amplification
systems utilized (hearing aids, cochlear implants,
FM Systems).
- Intensive speech, language, and
auditory training on a daily basis.
- Emphasis
on communication and academic skill development.
- Academic
instruction provided by the hearing specialist(s)
and the general education teacher.
- Students
are integrated with the general education
classrooms for special areas (music, physical
education, art, library, lunch, and recess).
- Students
may be integrated with the general education
curriculum for reading, language arts, math,
science, and social studies.
- On site audiological
services are provided by the audiologist as
needed.
- Additional special education services
provided as needed (resource, speech/language,
occupational/physical therapy).
