ACCOMMODATIONS AND MODIFICATIONS FOR STUDENTS WHO
ARE DEAF AND HEARING IMPAIRED
Students who are deaf and /or hearing impaired may
require accommodations in the general education
classroom. Here are a few suggestions for
accommodations:
ENVIRONMENTAL ACCOMMODATIONS
Preferential seating
Reduce/minimize distractions (visual, auditory,
tactile, movement, and/or social)
Modify room arrangement
INSTRUCTIONAL ACCOMMODATIONS
Use spatial-graphic-visual strategies and/or aids
Check often for understanding/review
Closed captioned material if needed
Peer tutor/Buddy System
Provide copies of notes from teacher/student
Provide extra practice
Modify assignments
Write assignments homework on board
Assignment notebook
Summarize and repeat important details of lesson
Encourage student to ask for assistance if needed
TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS
Repeat directions verbatim
Extended time
Oral testing
Flexible setting/scheduling
Modify test
COMMUNICATION ACCOMMODATIONS
Speak clearly and use a normal rate of speech
Face student when speaking
Repeat and rephrase information/instructions
Get student’s attention prior to speaking
