A place to eat. .

For the first time ever, Gibbs
Elementary school students will
have their own cafeteria. The fully
equipped kitchen is not quite ready,
but soon will be. |

And a place to play.

(February 19, 2007)
The new Gibbs Elementary
School officially opened its doors to students,
parents, and the community as dignitaries
gathered to cut the ribbon Monday, February
19.
Many students, who had the day off because
of teacher inservice sessions across the county,
came to school anyway to visit their new school
and find their classrooms when they returned
to classes on Tuesday.
The new school, which sits across Tazewell
Pike from the 'old' elementary school, was
finished ahead of schedule. Groundbreaking was
September 1, 2005.
The students sang a special song, "Big, Beautiful
New School" as part of the dedication ceremony.
The new facility features a large gymnasium
and a modern cafeteria as well as excellent
new classrooms, teacher office space, and work
areas.

Board Member Jim Williams, County
Mayor Mike Ragsdale, and Knox County Schools
Superintendent Dr. Charles Lindsey and other
dignitaries cut the ribbon to officially
open the new Gibbs Elementary School.
The new choral group at Gibbs
Elementary sang "Big,
Beautiful New School"
as part of the ceremony.

A place
to learn....
New classrooms
waited for students and parents. |

Gibbs Elementary's music teacher,
Ms. Mary Ruth McNatt, adapted the music of
"Big, Beautiful Planet" to create a special
song for the ribbon cutting ceremony. First,
second and third grade students - who had
prepared only briefly as part of a new Gibbs
Elementary chorus - sang the new song. The
new song became "Big, Beautiful School."
