Courses for students with disabilities

Last updated 3/27/2008

The course codes and titles for Special Education students with disabilities may vary depending upon the individual needs of each student as documented by the school IEP Team in the Individual Education Program (IEP).  The IEP Team will place the students in the least restrictive environment, the FIRST PRIORITY being regular program with modifications, if needed, the SECOND PRIORITY being elective Special Education courses, and the THIRD PRIORITY being required courses taught by special education teachers.  This procedure can result in an individual student being assigned to one, two or all three types of courses at the same time.  Credit Limit: Student is limited to four units of credit per semester (eight per year) for any combination of courses.

FIRST PRIORITY:  Whenever possible, special education students will be included in appropriate levels of regular education courses. If the IEP directs the teacher to modify the course for the student with disability, the teacher may add the small letter “m” beside and to the right of the student’s letter grade when reporting.  Modifications are individually determined for each student by the IEP Team.  Teachers may also make modifications for non-disabled students if needed.

Example:

   GRADE

 COLUMN

       C m

SECOND PRIORITY:  If the IEP indicates direct Special Education services, the student may be placed in elective Special Education courses. These courses do not have to fulfill a particular required academic credit but may be general in nature in order to meet the intent of the IEP.

THIRD PRIORITY:  If a student with a disability has attempted a required regular course and been unsuccessful, the IEP Team may consider providing the required credit through the Special Education program.  In such cases, the Special Education teacher adjusts the objectives of the course to comply with the student’s IEP and instructs the student accordingly.
