Graduation Requirements

Students may be recognized in one of three ways for completing high school: A regular diploma, a high school certificate, or a diploma of special education. In addition, students may be recognized as "Tennessee Scholars" by meeting standards set by that program.

Requirements
Regular Diploma

Awarded to students who have a satisfactory record of attendance and conduct. Students must pass Gateway exams in three (3) subjects (math, science, and English) and either

(1) specified number of units of scholastic credit earned in grades 9 through 12

 or

(2) satisfactorily complete Individualized Education Program (IEP) designed to be the terminal IEP with at least 6 months to a year of planning by an IEP team if student has a certified disability and has been identified under the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Improvement Act (IDEA -04).

* All current high school students pursuing a University or Dual Path must enroll in a math course in their senior year. Beginning with the 2007-2008 ninth grade class, ALL students will be required to enroll in a math course each year of high school.

** All students must complete one of the following: Biology, Biology for Technology, or the equivalent in an integrated science curriculum. All students must complete one course in the physical sciences.

*** Students entering 9th grade must complete 14 core subjects and either a 3-unit university path or a 4-unit technical path. (May choose both to complete a dual path.) Students in the university path must take Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II in the core area.

**** Total units required for graduation is 4 units less than the potential number (32) available in the master schedule of the student's school (or schools) during the four school years following the student's entry into the 9th grade.

High School Certificate

Awarded to students who lack passing scores on the Gateway exams but otherwise meet the attendance, conduct, and scholastic credit requirements of the regular Diploma. The Certificate may be exchanged for a regular Diploma at any time the student retakes and passes the failed Gateway exam(s).

Diploma of Specialized Education

Awarded to students who lack passing scores on the Gateway exams but who complete an Individualized Education Program (IEP) determined by an IEP team, and who attains an acceptable record of attendance and conduct. The Diploma of Specialized Education may be exchanged for a regular Diploma at any time the student retakes and passes the Gateway exams.

Tennessee Scholars

Students entering 9th grade have the opportunity to be designated as Tennessee Scholars by completing a prescribed course of study, maintaining a “C” average in all Tennessee Scholars courses, and successful passing of all State assessments.
