Clinical Internship 1 Student must have Health Science Education teacher approval and successfully completed one of the following courses: Medical Therapeutics, Medical Diagnostics, Health Management, Environmental Service, Rehabilitative Therapy, Emergency Medical Services 5501
Description:
(1 Period) A one-unit course meeting one 90-minute period per day for one term of 90 days.
(2 Periods) A one-unit course meeting two 90-minute periods for 45 days.
Students will take another Health Science Education course for the other 45 days of the 90-day term.
The Clinical Internship is for students in grades 11 or 12, designed to provide on-site specialized skill experience in a hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation center, medical office, or other health care facility.

Biomedical Applications 1 Health Science 5513
Description:
A one-unit course offered to students in grades 11-12 is an introduction to the broad standards that serve as a foundation in every facet of medicine, from diagnosis to the treatment of disease. This course will include information and laboratory skill required by the biomedical industry. Subject matter will include career choices, skill development, and applications of scientific concepts relative to becoming a biomedical research professional.

Description:
A one-unit course offered to students in grades 11-12. This course is an overview of how science is applied to solving crimes. Topics include history of forensic sciences, collecting of evidence, analyzing results and hands on application of many laboratory techniques used in solving crimes and identifying people and future careers.

Emergency Medical Services 1 5510
Description:
A one-unit course for students in grades 11 or 12 designed to provide knowledge of the emergency medical field including duties, responsibilities and legal aspects. The course focuses on skill development in patient assessment, communication, first aid measures, and the use of emergency medical equipment.

Description:
A one-unit course for students in grades 11 or 12 designed to focus on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide an environment for the delivery of health care. Careers include central supply, facility maintenance, food services, housekeeping, biomedical engineering, epidemiology, and others. The clinical internship may be taken following this course for on-site training experience.

Description:
A one-unit course for students in grades 11 or 12 designed to provide the knowledge and skills to document individual care in the home, hospital, long-term care, outpatient, and others. Careers include medical records, health management, unit coordinator, computer operator, and others. The clinical internship may be taken following this course for on-site training experience.

Description:
A one-unit course for students in grades 9-12 designed to introduce students to the broad standards that serve as a foundation for health care careers and functions across health services. Units include academics in health care communications systems, legal responsibilities, ethics, teamwork, and safety practices.

Diagnostic Medicine 1 5511
Description:
A one-unit course for students in grades 10, 11, or 12 designed to provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary in pursuing a career in diagnostic medicine. Diagnostic medicine creates a picture of an individual's health status at a single point in time. Careers include cardiology, imaging, medical laboratory, radiography, and others. The clinical internship may be taken following this course for on-site training experience.

Medical Therapeutics 1 5506
Description:
A one-unit course for students in grades 10, 11, or 12 designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to maintain or change the health status of an individual over time. This includes careers such as dental, medical assistance, home health, nursing, pharmacy, respiratory, social work, and others. The clinical internship may be taken for on-site training experience following successful completion of this course.

Nursing Education 1 5507
Description:
(2 Periods) A one-unit course for students in grades 11 and 12 with units of study dealing with direct patient care. Clinical experience will consist of supervised practice in the nursing home as well as demonstrations in the classroom. This course meets all federal and state requirements for a certified nurses aide. Students can be registered by Tennessee Department of Health after the completion of the course (180 hours clinical and theory), passing a state test. The class will meet two 90-minute periods for 45 days. Students will take another Health Science Education course for the other 45 days of the 90-day semester.

Rehabilitative Therapy 1 5503
Description:
A one-unit course for students in grades 11 and 12 that focuses on enabling a person to live to the fullest capacity possible. Topics include sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, and music and dance therapy. The clinical internship may be taken following this course for on-site training experience.

Cooperative Methodology/ Supervision Period See Note 5598
Note:
Cooperative Education is a paid, credit generating, work-based learning component. Credit for Cooperative Education is earned through the appropriate CTE class in which the student is enrolled for a maximum of one additional credit per semester. Students must work a minimum of ten (10) hours per week to earn the additional one credit in class. Student accounting is documented through the Cooperative Methodology/Supervision Period course code.
Students must:
(1) Have completed one unit in Health Science Education and be currently enrolled in another Health Science course. Students cannot co-op out of Health Science Education.
(2) Be in 12th grade.
(3) Satisfy all eligibility requirements.
(4) Be recommended by the Health Science teacher.
