Art Educators’ Award

Roz Martin from the Knoxville Museum of Art

“The Knox County Art Educators Exhibition began as a testament to the talent of dedicated teachers—celebrating our 10th anniversary we are proud that this exhibition has impacted our students and school communities, that it has increased awareness of the importance of Art education in Knox County, and that it provided opportunities to us as artists. Teaching itself is an art, to be lucky enough to teach the discipline called Art is to reach into the imagination and heart and intellect of students as well as enrich and strengthen our own artistic journeys—hopefully this exhibition provides the visual evidence of such.”

Art

Through quality art education, students learn to

  • Develop, express, and evaluate ideas
  • Produce, read and interpret visual images in an increasingly visually oriented world
  • Recognize and understand the artistic achievements and expectations of society.

The basic skills in art develop the intellect and increase visual sensitivity.  They enable the individual to identify and solve problems more effectively through the manipulation of visual, as well as verbal and numeric symbols; to discriminate among the mass of conflicting visual messages in day-to-day life; and to increase the possibility of communicating through visual images and thus make positive contributions to society.

The Knox County Schools Art Department, through the outstanding professionalism of dedicated and experienced administration, staff and teachers, provides an unparalleled level of art instruction to the young people of Knox County.  The expertise of these individuals has been recognized in many ways ranging from selection for national and international study through NAEA, the National Gallery, Fulbright Foundation, and others to state and national awards as a group and a department.  Many serve as committee members on state curriculum development, textbook adoption, and National Board Certification committees.  The tireless efforts of all members of the Art department on behalf of young people are unequalled in the state or nation.

Student artwork on display

As part of the museum's educational outreach program, each month the Knoxville Museum of Art will be displaying artwork by elementary school students and the Knoxville News Sentinel will be displaying them on KnoxNews.com.
