High School GED Option

The High School GED option is for students who are currently enrolled in Knox County Schools. It is different from the Adult GED program, although the actual GED testis given at the same site.

To participate in the high school GED option, a student must be at least seventeen (17) years old and must have too few credits to graduate in the traditional high school program. All school debts must be settled before entering the GED Option Program. Students must provide their own transportation to/from class and/or work.

Screening

Each high school is assigned a GED Option coordinator/instructor. There are four (4) GED Option instructors.

  • Pat Murphy is based at West High and offers GED classes for students at West, South-Doyle and Bearden.
  • Dan Dugger is based at the Byington-Solway Voc. Ctr. and offers GED classes for students at Karns, Powell, and Farragut.
  • Dennis Earl is based at Gibbs High and offers GED classes for students at Gibbs, Halls and Carter.
  • Robert Thew is based at Lincoln Park Technology and Trade Center and offers GED classes for students at Fulton, Austin-East and Central.

The high school guidance department will make referrals to the school's assigned coordinator. The student will report to the coordinator with the completed Guidance Referral Form for program assessment.

Parents must authorize screening. The student will be tested using one of the official GED practice tests and must score a minimum of 2000 on the practice test to be eligible for the program.

Students must score a minimum of 2500 on the practice test in order to be eligible to take the Official GED Exam.

Upon completion of the screening, the coordinator will approve or disapprove the student's appointment into the program. The coordinator will mark the referral form and return it to the base school for appropriate changes.

If accepted into the program, the schedule is then changed into the GED Option Program. The student must be assigned two vocational classes at their base school OR they must have employment and follow the State's Work-Based Learning Program.
