Curriculum-Based MeasurementEarly Literacy NormsFor students in kindergarten and first grade, early literacy measures (letter naming fluency and letter sound fluency) are used. Letter naming is administered throughout the year in kindergarten and in the fall of first grade. Letter sound is administered during kindergarten and first grades. Early literacy measures are important because they are the building blocks upon which reading is based and early identification of difficulty leads to a much greater reading proficiency success rate. The growth rates for that particular skill at various percentiles are presented. Some growth rates for periods are not listed because the particular skill is not assessed at every assessment period (benchmark). Letter Naming Fluency:A kindergarten student at the 10th percentile named 11 letter names correct during the winter benchmark with a weekly growth rate of 0.5 letter sounds from fall to winter.
