Elementary Schools

Knox County’s elementary schools provide a firm educational foundation for student learning. Formal instruction begins in the kindergarten year with orientation to the school environment and a strong emphasis upon phonemic awareness and early literacy. Grades one through five provide instruction in the core subjects of reading and writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and health and safety. Specialists in music, art, and physical education provide additional instruction. Classes are self-contained and heterogeneous, with student grouping to accommodate varying levels of instruction. Integration of curriculum is encouraged, and the daily program is organized into flexible blocks of time. Support personnel in each school assist the classroom teacher in meeting the special needs of elementary students.
